Breaking Through Stuttering Blocks: A Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
If you stutter, you know the feeling all too well—you’re mid-sentence, the word is right there, but nothing comes out. Your chest tightens, your mind races, and the pressure to “get it right” only makes it worse.
Stuttering blocks can feel frustrating, but here’s the truth: they don’t have to control you. Over the years, I’ve learned that how we respond to a block is far more important than the block itself.
How to Handle a Stuttering Block Like a Pro
Pause and Breathe – Instead of fighting the block, take a second to breathe. A calm pause is always better than forcing words out in a panic.
Reduce the Tension – Try loosening your jaw, relaxing your shoulders, or even giving yourself a slight smile. Tension feeds blocks, while relaxation helps ease them.
Use a Voluntary Stutter – This one might feel counterintuitive, but purposely stuttering on your terms gives you a sense of control and reduces the fear of blocking.
Keep Eye Contact – Breaking eye contact can make a block feel bigger than it is. Holding steady eye contact helps you stay present and keeps the conversation flowing.
Shift Your Mindset – Instead of seeing a block as a failure, see it as a moment of resilience. You’re still communicating, and that’s what matters.
